IIRC, you had to match the amount of RAM in each memory bank (512MB in slot 1, 512MB in slot 2, and 1GB in slot 3, for example).

I think there's little improvement over 2GB overall for most users, not actually worth losing dual channel most of the time. In a perfect world though, you would be running 4GB, all in dual channel. To be able to use those 4GB though, you would need a 64bit OS... but that's something else. If there is a final hour, let's hope for a higher power.
