I'll tell you what. TAT and CoreTemp have been closer to the real temps in my experience. Have you gone to Gigabytes forums to see if others are having this problem?

I don't want to insult your intelligence, but when you first installed the cooler, did you take the plastic covering off the base of the cooler? That cooler has a varible fan adjustment knob doesn't it? Have you set it to full blast? If you aren't using the adjustment knob, look in your bios for a fan speed setting and make sure it's at 100%. Finally, how did you apply the AS5 and are you absolutely sure the cooler is properly seated and is the fan actually spinning?

its by no means an insult to anyone's intelligence.....people forget to remove the cover from the base all the time (I've done it), some are on there very well, and are almost impossible to see.....sometimes people get excited about a new product and forget to set it up correctly, or read the instructions.

jph had made a good point in the beginning....what reading do you believe? Its hard to say because every processor is different. If you installed the cooler correctly , and everything is as it should be, then theres something else happening....maybe the core is not making good contact with the IHS, and therefore isn't transferring heat well. Maybe you are overlooking something like the V-Core setting, or maybe cooling solution isn't installed properly

Not to get off the beaten path of this thread, but I'd also like to squash or confirm a rumor I've heard regarding C2D processors and this whole temperature fiasco: I have been told, and read in several places, that if you OC a Conroe chip, and it does over-temp in terms of what Intel outlines as the 'normal' range, that it will run that hot from then on. Is there any truth to this? It sounds bunk to me. I'd love it if someone could clear this up for me.

its hard to say, you'll hear people argue that after overvlting a CPU for an extended period of time, it takes a lower VCore to OC, and you'll hear the opposite........its another one of those theory issues....like burn in.

IMO, the only way your processor will run hotter is if you damage it.

When finding the upper limit for my CPU, which was 3.6Ghz at 1.45v, I was hitting loaded temps of 68C. I even hit 72C a couple times trying to go higher on air. The E6600 has a thermal limit of 60.1C and a voltage limit of 1.3525v. I then backed it down to 3.4ghz at 1.375v and ran it that way for a week with loaded temps at 62C.

Now though, since I want the cpu to last for a couple of years at least, I run it at 1.35v and 3.375Ghz. Loaded temps are 52C most of the time. In the mornings, when the house is cooler, they are 48C. Idles around 40C. If I lower the voltage to 1.2v and the FSB so it's at a stock 2.4Ghz, the loaded temps are 42C and idles around 34C. Just because you ran the CPU into the upper limits doesn't mean it will always stay there. Once you lower the voltage, the temps will drop. It's just the nature of electronics.

I don't know how to put this, but, I'm kind of a big deal.

That's not how electronics work. Once the volts drop on your processor, so too will the temperature.

I'd be interested in seeing some of these sources that claim otherwise on the Core 2 Duo line.

My system (BIOS & Gigabyte's OC'ing tool are reporting my CPU temp to be around 40*C which is fine as its the middle of Australian summer and so I'd expect it to be somewhere around there.

Using TAT or CoreTemp however I'm getting reported temps of around 70*C.

These two values are HUGELY different and if TAT is correct (my system is not at all OC'd at the moment although I wanted to but am not going to until I sort this heat issue) then I am running at the high end of the recommended safe for an E6400!

If the BIOS is more correct however then I have loads of spare that I can fluctuate between.

I'm really not too sure what to do- I've removed the heat sink (Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX) and thermal paste (Artic Silver 5) and re-applied and re-seated the heat sink and still getting these values.

I'm totally confused as a 30*C difference is totally unrealistic and something is really wrong.

Please help :)
I highly doubt it's running at around 70C if it is installed properly.
You might want to stress your CPU with something such as Prime95 to see if your core temp goes up. If it doesn't move at all, you know:
A) The temprature reading is wrong
B) The IHS is not making proper contact with the core, in which case you need to send back your CPU.

If it moves however, you have to further inspect if other users had this problem and if your cooling solution is properly installed.
So far, i've had very good reading with both BIOS and softwares, though it's not rare to see a certain offset with both methods.

Good luck

I'm not sure, but Weren't some of the C2D IHS slight convex or concave...whatever (The one where they bend slightly)so pretty much preventing any contact with the IHS with anything besides the stock heatsink? It could be a possibility.

Try cleaning the sink and the CPU off of all TIM, put some AS5 of the CPU, and take a credit card or something and spread it into a very thing layer, then mounting the heatsink, then take it off and see if the TIM has even contact all over the base of the sink.

thats not an issue unique to the C2D processors.......

I didn't say that it was unique to the C2D...
