No Vista doesn't remember. There's apps made to assign programs to cores automatically though that I've used under XP. I don't quite remember the name of those (2 apps as far as I remember) though. Maybe someone else can help you.

As for being future proof, by the time the majority of apps use 4 cores, chances are your computer will be outdated in many other sectors IMO.

That's very true ill want 8 cores by then like the mac pro option (2 Xeon quad cores) do we really need all this power!

Unless you're multi-tasking major time, you like don't need 8 cores, let alone 4. I think 4 cores really target a specific type of people (who got normally very specific applications that can utilize more than 1 CPU/core), but Intel just brought it to "commoners" to stay the top dog.
People easily get attracted to stuff like "dual core" even if you're selling a single core CPU which is much stronger for cheaper.

And yeah, chances are you'll be asking for 8 cores or something that ridiculous when the majority of applications use 4 cores. It's hard being a geek. :P

We've been preaching this since dual-core procs first emerged, but realistically, widespread multi-threaded coding is a long ways off. With very exceptions, developers continue to drag their feet, and that's not likely to change anytime soon.

But even playing devil's advocate, suppose that developers did start suddenly churning out multi-threaded apps left and right, with everything from anti-virus to word processing programs taking advantage of multiple cores. This unrealistic scenario (for the foreseeable future) isn't a damnation against dual-core processors, and instead will only make them faster, because right now they're just not being utilized beyond multitasking activities. Quad cores would expand on this (assuming developers not only start coding for multiple cores, but optimizing them too), but the difference between a quad and dual would be far less than the difference between a dual and single cored proc.

We're in a similar boat when talking about 32-bit versus 64-bit. Touting 64-bit support was a major marketing bullet when AMD64 processors first emerged, but years later, we're still very much entrenched in a 32-bit world. But that's a topic for another thread, or blog...

so anyway, i've decided im gonna just keep my E3110 (Xeon branded E8400). I did however take advantage of the microcenter 200 dollar Q6600 and picked one up for my brother so he can upgrade from his E2140. Now I got some barebones to build my mom a new comp, since she's still using a P3 800mhz she took home from work lol

(thanks blake!)

I wish that was the case, but her view on computers is as long as it runs word & email, you're fine. Mind you she's a Computer Engineer who works with ASP.NET, VB, and CICS but she just believes a computer's a tool. When i went off to college 5 yrs ago, she wanted me to bring the P3 500mhz to college with me, saying i just need word and email lol.

I just upgraded the wifes from a prebuilt Dell P4 1.8GHz (with RDRAM) that was on its last leg up to a E2140 and 1GB DDR2

Thanks HL and Corsair!

It all depends on what you use the PC for.

I chose quad-core because I benchmark, game and run a bunch of applications.

Yeah I totally agree.

I went from a P4 2.4GHz CPU on a dell to a X2 4200 2.2 I saw a great increase in loading web pages and just in overall simple tasks. Thats why I said I bet she'll love that new CPU since it will just make things all a lot more responsive.
