AMD compares to the lower end CPUs from Intel when it comes to performance but they uses the top end price to show how much cheaper they are supposed to be.

And they are not comparable to similarly clocked Intel Quad CPUs the Q6600 out performs the 9700, and costs less.
Games, as I said, are not a good comparison for CPUs they still can be included in a testing suit just to show that is no negative impact from the CPU.

I am a gamer, so reviews on how a proc does with gaming do matter to me... if I see the AMDs do about the same as the Intels and its a few bucks cheaper, I may use it with my next build even if everything else favors Intel.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

You may , but i highly doubt it.... with the current generation knowing what we know

The problem is, the AMD CPUs are not cheaper...
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 95W Processor - Retail
$269.99 2.3GHz

Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - OEM
$260.99 2.4GHz

so for $10 less you can get a faster Intel CPU....
Just in case you thow up the argument that the Intel is OEM
Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail
$10 more and still faster...

The price argument is sort of thrown out the window.

Too bad for AMD ... with the ease of Intel overlocking ... likely no OC enthusiasts will even play with the buggy AMD.

Man I hope they have something for their next run of processors. Would be a great stock to P/U cheap ... if they did. By the "Jump-Ship" reaction from the execs ... I doubt they have any real plan to compete with Intels breakneck lead in the CPU market.

Yeah, we definitely need some competition in the CPU market... even though Intel isn't doing too bad with their pricing, we still need competition.

Why?

This is something I've put a lot of thought into....and to be honest, I am beginning to think its a myth.

While competition is good, and in most cases fuel price wars, and advances in technology....it seems to me that INTEL has done a phenomenal job (just a little pun intended) in filling every niche in the CPU market with quality products.

My second argument comes in the form of supporting hardware and software.......for all the complaining about competition, theres not a whole lot that takes advantage of multi-core processors at this point, and outside the benchmarking whores....no one can tell the difference.

As to hardware, CPUs haven't been the bottleneck of computer systems for quite sometime, that distinction goes to HDD, which really need to dramatically improve.

I know, in the most basic sense, we need the competition, but before AMD caught lightning in a bottle a couple years back, this was the status quo, with INTEL ruling the roost and dictating the market, its nothing new.
