| A lot of socket 939 AMDs sometimes had bad thermal contact between the heat spreader and the actual CPU core itself. On socket 939, AMD just essentially put globs of thermal paste on the core, and put an epoxy type substance around the edge of the heat spreader to hold it in place. Sometimes the contact wouldn't be them and you'd get one core that was tons hotter then the other. Some people have reported temps as lower as much as 10*C+ from taking the spreader off, but I don't recommend doing that if you stll have a warranty on your CPU, or do not want to risk killing it . Now AMD solders the heat spreader onto the core, so the heat transfer is usually a bit better over all Opteron 64 165--1.5GB DDR--ECS KA1 MVP(thanks HL!)--x1800GTO 256MB--Seagate 320GB SATA--Antec 550 Watt--Antec P180 |

| A Lonely Geek | No, the cores are side by side...they are different temps because one is working harder than the other, they never share the work equally. Even the Core 2 Duos and Core 2 Quads don't share the work equally. I have an AMD X2 4400+ Toledo core. It is basically the same as yours, but clocked slower. (that is an oversimplication, but good enough for this example) With room temp at 72F, I get a load temp of 47-48C. With the room at 78-80F, the load temp climbs to 50-52C, maybe as high as 55C at times. Room temp has a tremendous effect on CPU temp. Depending on the case (I change cases quite a bit, and if one has a window fan, I usually use it too), I always have a 120mm fan front and back, with them running at +5v. (half speed) With my rather cool GPU (due to about twice the cooler than is necessary), that suffices, even with my passive motherboard chipset cooling. If your case is sufficiently ventilated, you should experience case temps just a few degrees C higher than room temp. Last edited by fstroupe; January 7th, 2008 at 04:50. |

| I'm sorry thats incorrect. It wouldn't account for a 10*C+ difference in temps. If the IHS is making proper contact, both cores should be about the same temperature. Back when this site was first starting out, someone posted an article about popping the IHS and what kind of temp drops they got, I have no idea if it is still on here though EDIT: Your temps could just be a badly shaped IHS like you said, my opteron 165 @ 2.7GHz loaded around 55-56*C tops. A way to find out if your IHS is concave/convex is to take some tim and spread it very thinly on something flat, then put the CPU IHS side down onto the TIM and give it a little pressure, then pull it off, wherever the TIM sticks to is higher then the rest, and should be lapped down, if you want to risk it Opteron 64 165--1.5GB DDR--ECS KA1 MVP(thanks HL!)--x1800GTO 256MB--Seagate 320GB SATA--Antec 550 Watt--Antec P180 Last edited by Lead Head; January 7th, 2008 at 12:13. |

| Colonel Calamity | right but if the BIOS readings are off or reading the wrong sensor then it doesn't matter what temp program you use as they will all be off or read different depending on the sensors... ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | Usually the BIOS reads from a sensor that is placed somewhere within the CPU, that its not necessarily the actual core sensors . My BIOS reads around 10-15*C hotter then what coretemp reads, and i have confirmed coretemps reading with my DMM before. | I used to have a fan on the window but the Tuniq Tower gets in the way so all I have is a 80mm grill in the center of my window case which my Tuinq Tower sucks air through and thats about it. I'm sure it's sucking more hot air off other the hardware though. Lead Head what is a DMM? | How does the DMM compare to coretemp 0.96? I was looking at getting a Infrared temp reader but it's a bit pricy considering I'd only be buying it for the CPU temperature. I decided to take off the side panel to see what would happen. I ended up geting a 4-5 degree drop in Orthos. ![]() Athlon X2 4800+ Toledo @2.61Ghz Tuniq Tower 120 LFB SilenX iXtrema Pro 120mm intake, Titan 120mm exhaust Foxconn Winfast NF4SK8AA-8EKRS 2X1GB PATRIOT LLK PC3200 2.5-3-2-5 XFX 8800GT 512mb xXx Zalman cooled edition. | Never know it may reduce your temps a lot if you try a aftermarket gpu cooler.?? Or something that can get that hot air out and away from the cpu in any case CPU-E6750 @3.24 GHz stock volts RAM-Geil 667 @800Mhz GIGABYTE- GA-P35-DS3P THERMALRIGHT IFX-14 CPU Cooler ![]() SAPPHIRE X1950 Pro Windows xp pro ![]() "If in doubt get a bigger hammer" |
