Did you only test one CPU? Maybe it was just a "bad" CPU.....................

Rich....it's all good brother. I understand your mindset now that I've had a nap.

I just wonder if Intel isn't "unofficially" hamstringing some of the newer processors to help keep the upper clocked line in a more desirable market position. This is totally conjecture on my part of course.

The alternative is that Intel is slipping on their production QA compared to this same time period last year.

Or maybe the newer processors, now firmly entrenched in the enthusiast community again, aren't being made to as "flexible" as before. I can think of at least 10 different reasons a corporate decision could be made to go in this direction with their products.

We can sit and postulate about the reasons all day long. It still doesn't help the fact that the first couple iterations were excellent overclockers and now, all of a sudden, these newer and better cores aren't overclocking as well and Intel just says..."It overclocks beyond stock, so be happy with that."

I'd be a little pissed to expect my sleeper style station wagon Vega with a 454 big block to do 10 seconds flat in the 1/4 only to find out the secondaries are stuck closed from the manufacturer. Now I have this big, bad ass engine that's hamstrung. Like it has been governed.

Too bad you can't put fuel injection on what should be a sure thing.

After receiving a few emails on the issue, and seeing responses around different forums, I'd like to clarify a few things.

First, this processor does run the rated speed, so in all honesty there is no reason to RMA it. However, I do have a reason to gripe, and i think a very valid point.

No OC results are guaranteed, but if there is a flaw in the processor that prevents people from tinkering, and finding the best combination of memory and motherboard settings, why would people buy it? Why would i recommend it, and what is wrong with me pointing out the issue? I've been doing this for quite awhile, and as I said, am working with several motherboard companies on the issue. I'd also like to point out the fact (as judging by emails, some people missed the point), that I switched out the processor with both a Q6600 and E6600 and was able to push the FSB much further.

I think my big gripe, as I said, was the response and general "F U" attitude I got from the INTEL person I talked to. Knowing we're a review site, and that we bought this processor for motherboard reviews.....how hard would it have been to simply say "Hey, you got a bad one, let us make it right".....instead, we get the response we did, which is a red flag to me that theres another issue here.

The whole point is that ALL these chips MUST be "flawed" in the way described by Capper. Also, all the points you make are extremely valid and should definitely be considered. No, there is nothing WRONG with the chip, no, it isn't a valid reason to RMA it or anything like that. BUT, the 'problem' you've been experiencing IS a valid discussion topic, and DEFINITELY an aspect of the chip that should be considered before being purchased by anyone.

Interesting bug to say the least, one thing I'm not sure if you considered or not is that when you set the FSB to 415, some part of CPU has to be running at 415MHz, not necessarily the execution core, but a part of it that communicates with the FSB, maybe its possible that one little piece cannot operate at that speed, effecting the rest of the CPU? I know RangerXLT said that at one time his Pentium D would not run at stock speeds anymore, but ran fine OCed. Very weird, his might not be on the budget, but could you try getting another E6850 and see if the results are similar?

Thats an expensive piece of hardware to buy just to confirm it sucks. I would think we'll see more reports before long about this problem.
