with Kentsfield on the horizon, I suspect we can be seeing some 985 chipsets pretty soon here as several articles I have seen state that 975 compatibility is sporadic and more sporadic with the 965

Thanks HL and Corsair!

I think most of the reason for those articles is to sell more hardware. BIG SURPRISE HUH!.

The bios update to support the quad core for my motherboard came out a month ago. That was after I had heard that the DS3 wouldnt' support quads because of the 3phase power? I'm not sure what the official intel position is on chipsets that support quads, but I'm sure it will be done to make sure as many people have to buy new motherboards as possible.

On the other side of that, I can't see them selling very many CPUs that cost over $1000. So maybe it doesnt' matter.

IMO...... I really would have rather seen them expand the conroe product line with more options and more affordable chips before they focused everything on a chip that nobody can afford. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe those people who are planning to buy the new DX10 graphics cards won't mind paying that kind of money for a cpu.

Default Tested the Beta F8i bios

Maybe one of the other folks here can tell you if this matters in your decision. I'm just not knowledgable enough of memory to really understand it. I guess if I hadn't been able to overclock my 920 so high, I might have tried more to understand it too. LOL.
I tested the F8i bios today. That was a waste of time. If they improved things for the C2D croud, they made it clear that Pentium D isn't on their radar. I had so many problems I thought I might have to use the clear cmos jumper for the very first time LOL. So needless to say, I'm back at production F7 bios sailng at 4ghz.

so far from what I have heard, to run a high end proc, you will need a high end mobo such as the D975XBX2...
again the budget crowd gets screwed, even when/if they do release a QE6300 because you need a $300 mobo to run it...

That isn't entirely true. The DS3 is a great motherboard and quite frankly I have a 1.2 ghz overclock on it with little or no tweaking. There are huge numbers of people out there who are running C2D processors on the DS3 at close to or over 500 fsb. I would not in any way consider it a cheap motherboard.

There have been some issues with the D9 micron memory not being able to run over 1000 mhz, but this is really just a problem due to the disease of obsessive overclocking (trust me, I have it).

As far as the D975XBX2 board, anyone who wants to spend $300 on a motherboard that wont let you overclock in the bios, they can have it. Maybe I am speaking without enough knowledge, but i've seen tons of benchmarks from people who had to overclock that board with software because the bios options weren't available. So I don't think I'd be recommending it to anyone anytime soon.

Just my opinion
