Well, even QX6700s don't seem to be limited by DDR2 yet, Intel's next gen might be however

Ehh. No big deal. Didn't some ppl do some benchmarks with their top end cpus? The quadcore ones. Something like only a maximum of 6% increase in performance over a quadcore Woodcrest.

we'll just have to wait and see.......DDR3 is closer than you think, as are the new chipsets and motherboards that support it

I don't know about you guys, but I'm really P.O.'d at AMD. I paid a lot of $$$ for my FX55 and now if I want to upgrade it I'm going to have to change processors, mobos, and ram. Whatever marketing or design genius thought that abandoning 939 would endear AMD to its customers is gravely mistaken. When I upgrade, I will probably make the move to Intel.

The switch had to come, mainly because of DDR production dropping off, and they DDR does not really have that much bandwith compared to DDR2. Intel doesn't have the best track record with sockets either.

Very true. Intel users have been experiencing this same frustration for the whole Netburst based CPU run. And then some.

Moving from s939 to AM2 and now on to AM3 and above are simply signs of a CPU manufacturer trying hard to keep up with 1. The competition and 2. The leaps in technology. Now if you want to be pissed to be an AMD owner, an AM2 based mobo owner has every right to be upset. Just like a lot of Intel mobo owners were when Intel popped up with the Core2Duo CPU. Very little foresight that CPU was coming out and the large majority of mobo's wouldn't support it. Even though Intel made it on the current LGA775 socket, most mobo's wouldn't go to the much lower voltages the C2D CPU's use.

Not a big fan of the "Phenom" model name, but whatever...
Looks like an interesting first lineup. Good to see them already out with a 2.8GHz model, that means that maybe they can get higher clock speeds out of this new architecture (even better news for overclockers). What is even more intersting though is the dynamic bus frequency! Notice how all the different models have different bus speeds unlike Intel's 800MHz FSB for all E4xxx series chips and 1066MHz for all E6xxx series. I'm very excited to see what this new architecture is capable of, seems very uniuqe. Like Capper said, AMD is in dire need of an architecture upgrade. The Athlons are getting almost as tired as Intel's Pentiums were...

get ready because DDR3 is just around the corner...
then there will be AM2+ and AM3 for AMD.. then who knows what for Intel as they always have too many sockets and procs that are too close together.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

amd needs to, from now on, keep up with intel and dish out new CPUs as soon as they can. the new architecture and what they have now looks like it can easily overtake intel if looked at and executed correctly...

they have to keep up.
